In Cushendun in my younger days

Hurling on the white strand

My fair hurl in my hand.

Missing the bird song

No voice of cock, blackbird or corncrake

Nor do I even realise its Sunday

The Narrow Gauge Line

By Siobhan Ni Luain

Looking up through the trees,

Leaning out from the door

 I shall never again

See the train from Parkmore

With its small shining engine

So sturdy and grand

And it winding its way

Through the length of the land

Oh there once was a time,

And a time there was then,

When the train, like the river,

Was part of the Glen,

And the thread that connected us,

Silver and fine,

With the rest of the world

Was the narrow gauge line

You never knew what

That small train would be bringing

To the halt by the bushes

With all the birds singing;

With its soft trail of smoke

And its rumble of thunder;

And who would get out

Would be half a days wonder.

When I was a child

Id have said that for ever

The train would endure

Just the same as the river.

But the worlds in a hurry

With your life and mine

And it hasnt much use for

A narrow -gauge line

Ossians Grave

By Sydney Bell

They say

It was here that Ossian died:

I wonder if bright-haired Niamh cried?

Whose lonely fingers piled the cairn

And heaped it high with maiden fern?

They say

That only the plovers know

The feet that track the drifted snow,

And the peeweets cry

Though theyve never seen-

The name of the one who loved Ossian.

I hope  and I hope

That he found somewhere

His slender Niamh of the yellow hair,

For theirs was a song too brief to scan

With a rickle of bones

And an old,blind man.
